Email account holders often do not share their password or account information with others. Read on to learn how to access a deceased's Hotmail account

Many email account holders keep their passwords and sign in information private. While this is generally advisable, it can create complications if an individual passes away or becomes incapacitated without making provisions for another to access the account. In this event, there is a specific Hotmail procedure to follow. Because of appropriate protection and security, access to the email account will not be provided unless you have the legal authority.

Accessing a Deceased's Hotmail Account

So what do you do if you are the rightful and legal beneficiary or executor of the deceased's Hotmail or Windows LIve email account? The requirements are fairly consistent with accessing other types of accounts upon death or incapacitation - perhaps a bit less stringent. Still, there are strict standards which need to be met before the account information will be shared with you.

First, send an email to msrecords@microsoft.com, including the specific email address of note, as well as your own name and email address. This will initiate the proceedings and keep the account open for 6 months. If there is no further response within the 6 months, the action to preserve the account will be deleted. Hotmail normally will not close an account prior to 365 days of inactivity. Of course, it is advisable to start the procedure as soon as possible and to stay on top of it. While you are gathering the following documents, send an email to the above address to request preservation of the email account. All communications must be in English.

Guidelines for Document Submission

The documents required to gain access of the email account must be sent in the mail together to:

Windows Live/MSN Compliance, 1065 La Avendida, Bldg 4, Mountain View, Ca. 94043. You may send a fax instead, to the Custodian of Records at: 425-708-0096

They documents required include:

  • Your proof of power of attorney
  • Your proof of executor status
  • Your drivers license (a duplicate copy)
  • Death certificate of account holder
  • Account name of account holder
  • Date of birth of account holder
  • Physical address of account holder
  • Date of email creation
  • Date of last email sign in

Once Hotmail receives and verifies all information, you will be sent a copy of all emails and contacts of the email account. As you can see, this time consuming effort can be avoided by proper planning. Although everyone has different email needs and reasons for security, this does not preclude adequate preventative filing of all records. You can file such records with your attorney, accountant, trusted loved ones, or other designated party. It is thoughtful and kind to assist others at this otherwise stressful time.
